Jurisprudence Module

The jurisprudence module evaluates a physiotherapist's understanding and application of the rules governing their practice in Alberta.

The module consists of 60 multiple choice questions based on 20 Standards of Practice. Some of the questions relate to case-based practice scenarios while others are stand-alone questions. Some questions test knowledge while others test application and critical thinking.

The pass score is 68% or 41/60.

Three sample questions to give you an idea what to expect.

Sample Question 1

A patient presents for shockwave treatment of chronic bilateral plantar fasciitis. The physiotherapist assesses and determines that shockwave therapy is indicated, and provides the patient with a brochure outlining the fees for shockwave. In the first treatment session both feet are treated. When the patient receives the clinic’s invoice, they become upset and complain to the physiotherapist threatening to take the matter to the physiotherapy regulatory college. The clinic manager intervenes, checks the College’s standards and agrees to refund half the billed amount. Which statement provides the best rationale for the manager providing the refund given the circumstances?

  1. The fee schedule did not specify whether the listed fees were for the provision of the modality itself or for its application to an individual body segment.
  2. The radial shockwave therapy treatment was not provided safely and effectively because the patient's foot pain persisted after that first treatment.
  3. The performance of radial shockwave is a restricted activity and the physiotherapist delivering shockwave was not authorized by the College.
  4. Alternative treatments and their risks and benefits were explained prior to delivering the radial shockwave treatment.

Cognitive Level: Application
Standard of Practice: Fees and Billing

Sample Question 2

The physiotherapist receives a new referral to see a patient who is in isolation. As the physiotherapist approaches the patient room, they notice that the patient appears to be in respiratory distress and requires immediate airway clearance. Which of the following should the physiotherapist do?

  1. Call for help, then when help arrives, quickly enter the room to provide them with assistance and support.
  2. Enter the room quickly, then put on a gown, gloves and a mask and provide respiratory care and support.
  3. Call for help, quickly put on a gown, mask, and gloves, enter the room to provide respiratory care and support.
  4. Call for help, wait for their arrival and allow them to provide all of the respiratory care and support.

Cognitive Level: Critical Thinking
Standard of Practice: Safety

Sample Question 3

A physiotherapist is responsible for triaging patients recently discharged from the hospital for outpatient physiotherapy services. There is a long waiting list because there are staff shortages and a high demand for services. Correctly triaging and prioritizing patients is paramount.

The physiotherapist must report to the regulatory college their work on the triage waiting list management project. Using the College practice standards as a reference, which term and explanation most accurately describes the physiotherapist's work on the triage waitlist project?

  1. Risk Management, because the project accesses and applies relevant information to improve patient care and the delivery of physiotherapy services.
  2. Patient-Centered Experience, because the project uses shared leadership and conflict resolution strategies to optimize effective patient care
  3. Quality Improvement, because the project includes the evaluation, development, and implementation of improved physiotherapy services to enhance patient care.
  4. Quality Assurance, because the project communicates with patients to explain the care plan and facilitate their consent to physiotherapy services available in the practice setting.

Cognitive Level: Knowledge/Comprehension
Standard: Quality Improvement
