Under Alberta's diagnostic and treatment protocols regulation, the College is required to provide the Superintendent of Insurance with the names of physical therapists who meet established criteria and apply to be an Injury Management Consultant (IMC).
IMC role
IMCs are a resource to patient's and their primary healthcare practitioner in the assessment and treatment of sprains, strains and whiplash-associated disorders (WADs) occurring from motor vehicle accidents (MVA) and treated under the diagnostic and treatment protocols regulation. IMCs:
• Receive referrals from primary healthcare practitioners.
• Assess refrred patients by reviewing provided health information and conducting
a medical history and physical exam if necessary to evaluate sprain, strain
and/or WAD injury and the effects on the patient.
• Requests/reviews diagnostic tests necessary to complete injury assessment.
• Establish diagnosis within framework of prescribed diagnostic and treatment protocols if
protocols are applicable to injury.
• Provide written report to referring practitioner detailing findings, diagnosis and any
recommendations for treatment or further evaluation.
• Forward a copy of report to patient's insurance company.

IMC requirements and application
• Hold active College license and actively engaged in physical therapy practice in Alberta
• Not part of any ongoing disciplinary action.
• Actively treat MVA patients.
• Provides all documentation requested on the application form.
Physical therapists, engaged in active practice in Alberta who are not part of any ongoing disciplinary action, are eligible. To apply, download and complete an application form and submit with the required documentation.
