Radiation Protection Act

Class 3B lasers
Alberta’s Radiation Protection Act (RPA) mandates all radiation emitting devices, including Class 3b Lasers commonly used in physical therapy clinics, be registered with an accredited agency. No one must operate radiation equipment unless it has been registered.

The RPA also requires that radiation equipment undergo regular inspection by an approved Authorized Radiation Inspection Agency. The University of Calgary’s Safety Services is the agency assigned to register radiation equipment, including Class 3b Lasers, used by physical therapists. Clinic owners who:

    • purchase a Class 3b Laser or
    • retire or dispose of a registered laser

are responsible for advising the University of Calgary, Safety Services.
